Photo: Getty<br><br>Over the past decade, smartphones have become ubiquitous not just for sending texts and staying abreast of news, but also for monitoring daily activity levels.<br><br>Among the most common, and arguably the most meaningful, tracking method for daily physical activity is step counting.<br><br>Counting steps is far more than a fad: The US Department of Health and Human Services dedicated a sizeable portion of its most recent physical activity guidelines to documenting the relationship between daily step counts and several chronic diseases.<br><br>Unfortunately, the guidelines have little to say about how step counts might be used to aid in weight management, an outcome of critical importance given the high rates of overweight and obese people in the US.<br><br>In the early 1980s, fewer than 14 per cent of adults in the US were classified as obese.<br><br>Today, just over 40 years later, the prevalence of obesity is greater than 40 per cent in the adult population, and current trends suggest that almost half of adults in the US will be obese by 2030.<br><br>I am a professor of exercise science at Kennesaw State University, and our lab has been conducting studies examining relationships among step counts and a number of health outcomes.<br><br>]]></content:encoded>

Lifters — perhaps especially bodybuilders — also tend to consider nutrition to be a crucial part of their programming. Mobility, sleep, and physical recovery-related aspects of strength sports sometimes get their dues, too.<br><br>But too rarely do most strength athletes consider what is arguably one of the most crucial tenets of lifting heavy — mindset. Meditation can be an incredibly impactful way to improve your recovery, reduce your stress, and even help you get stronger and build more muscle in the gym. And while meditation for strength athletes isn’t a replacement for getting help with your mental health if you need it, it can be a good supplement to professional assistance.<br><br>Meditation might not be the first place lifters turn to when they need to improve their training game or bust through plateaus. But learning to meditate — and making it a consistent practice — can help elevate strength athletes to the top of their class.                         <content:encoded><![CDATA[Oura’s excellent hardware isn’t the only reason it sits at the top of our best smart ring rankings—it’s also the top option if you need a device that integrates well with other platforms.<br><br>Last year, the company announced an integrations library so users can connect a host of services to the Oura app. The idea is to expand the ecosystem by allowing Oura to communicate with other apps, with two-way syncing often available and allowing users to enjoy richer platforms.<br><br>While Oura excels at tracking sleep and core vitals, the form factor limits its capabilities in other areas. Workouts are an example of where Oura and smart ring competitors struggle.<br><br>Some apps, including glucose monitoring and women’s health metrics, are subject to FDA regulation, which means integrating is a perfect way to bring top-grade features to Oura without the ring having to track it natively.<br><br>In total, Oura supports over 800 integrations. It’s an impressive number, to be sure, but we’re not going to list them all. Instead, and because most require a subscription to both services, we’ve selected 14 that we believe are the best and most far-reaching.<br><br>To try these out, open the Oura app’s hamburger menu (in the top left) and select ‘Integrations’.<br><br>Natural Cycles is the only FDA-cleared birth control app that connects to Oura for biometric insights.
