What to Do About Lower Back Pain After Deadlifts

Lower back pain is common after deadlift workouts, most often caused by improper technique, inadequate warm-ups, and weak or imbalanced core muscles. Mild injuries can be treated at home with rest, ice application, and over-the-counter painkillers, but severe cases may require specialist care from a physical therapist or orthopedic surgeon.

A deadlift isΒ a weightlifting exercise in which you raise a barbell from the floor to a standing position, using your back, hip, and leg muscles. Lower back pain can occur with deadlifts due toΒ sprains or strains, most typically of a group of back muscles called theΒ erector spinae.1

Causes and contributing factors of deadlift back injuries include:1

Low back pain can occur during deadlifts if you lift too heavy, don’t have enough rest, or have improper form. If your back pain persists despite supportive measures like rest, stretching, and anti-inflammatory techniques, reach out to a healthcare provider for an evaluation.

You may experience mild soreness 24 to 72 hours after a deadlift workout. This common reaction, known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), occurs when your body is not accustomed to a certain physical activity. DOMS often indicates that your muscles are adapting and becoming stronger.2

Conversely, a deadlift injury occurs when the muscles, ligaments, or tendons of the back are stretched or torn. It can also result from an injury to the lumbar spine, such as a herniated disc.1

In these cases, symptoms usually appear immediately and may include:3

See a healthcare provider if lower back pain is severe or persists for more than two weeks despite home care and rest.4

The ‘pump’ from this combo is actually insane. My skin felt tight the whole session.

Liquid aminos are my go-to during long, heavy leg sessions.
