But there’s something addictive about seeing your meters tick higher and higher. Each pull reminds you that your heart and lungs are working overtime and it’s satisfying to know you’re pushing them to their limits. Afterward I felt exhausted but alive and my chest still feels that rhythm echoing.

Now i can knock out 45 minutes straight and my arms my back and mylegs feel worked in a balanced way. There’s a rhythm to rowing that’s almost meditative u push you glide repeat. Jim Wendler dismissed that. After years under the bar as a Division I football player, elite powerlifter, and coach, he created 5/3/1, a program based on simplicity, patience, and long-term gains.

The 5/3/1 system emphasizes doing less but doing it better. It centers on four main lifts, and each workout follows a progression of submaximal percentages, gradually increasing intensity while allowing enough recovery to come back stronger. Here, with the help of Jason Leenaarts, owner of Revolution Fitness And Therapy and a coach who’s been running the 5/3/1 system since 2010, we’ll break it all down for your benefit.

After competing as an elite powerlifter with a best total of over 2,000 pounds, Wendler realized that many lifters—himself included—were getting lost in details. Too much focus on max lifts and not enough steady progress.

Variation is the name of the game in weight training. Performing the same exercise every week can lead you to a plateau. It is easier to avoid an overhead ceiling than to break through one. Using exercise variations helps you train your muscles from different angles, which keeps your muscles guessing — and growing.

Things, however, get complicated when similar-looking exercises have different names — case in point — the military press, overhead press, shoulder press, and push press.

People might switch between these exercises in hopes of avoiding a plateau. Still, they are training the same muscle groups from the same angles, rendering these variations ineffective for avoiding a roadblock.

Most lifters are clueless about these shoulder exercises and use the terms military press, overhead press, shoulder press, and push press interchangeably. This, however, is a mistake.

Level Up Your Fitness: Join our 💪 strong community in Fitness Volt Newsletter. Although the military, overhead, shoulder, and push press follow the same movement pattern, there are subtle differences between the four.

Learning about the differences can help you design better training programs for yourself or your clients. Nonetheless, it puts you in a position to give unsolicited advice to lifters in your gym.

This article explains the differences between the military, overhead, shoulder, and push press. We also cover the muscles worked, common mistakes people make while doing these pressing movements, and who each exercise is best suited for. There is a lot to cover, so sit tight.

Sandbag training has surged in popularity in recent years as a highly effective and versatile tool for improving strength, core stability, and overall endurance. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast looking for a new challenge or an athlete aiming to enhance your functional strength, incorporating sandbag exercises into your routine can provide a range of benefits. In this guide, we will explore how sandbag training can help you achieve your fitness goals, along with beginner, intermediate, and advanced workout routines to get you started.

At its core, sandbag training involves using a weighted bag, typically filled with sand or other materials, to perform exercises that target various muscle groups. Unlike traditional weight training, where the load is stable and predictable, the sandbag's shifting weight forces your body to engage stabilizer muscles and challenge your balance, coordination, and endurance. This instability makes sandbag training an excellent choice for developing functional strength, the kind of strength you use in everyday movements.
